Does Illinois have bigger problems than Coaching?
« on: February 20, 2012, 09:33:14 AM »
In the Bubble thread, somebody had mentioned that if we are in the NIT we very well could have to go on the road to play in the first round due to the circus being scheduled there

I'm sure everybody remembers, the last time we were in NIT we had to go on the road because of this same thing as well.....Remind me again why we got rid of the Chief?  oh yeah it was so we could host NCAA postseason tourney games LIKE, the NIT!!  The more you start to look at things around here, it makes it seem like COACHING is not the only problem at this university. Much like bad pro sports franchises , I'm really begging to think its a TOTAL school/organizational problem we have on our hands here..think about it...

1.) We have administration members that come out in the press and tear the school down in open forum pointing out they have never hired a minority coach for football or basketball. Where are your priorities at when you say things like that in open forum? Shouldn't this type of stuff be handled within the school and not in the media for everybody to hear and get a negative perception of your program and school?

2.) We got rid of a iconic figure/ mascot, thanks in no small part to some of our own professors at our University bad mouthing the very school that gives them a lively hood , but also  because the NCAA threatened to ban us from hosting postseason events. So again you are a representative our the University of Illinois and you have the audacity to rip them up in open public?  As far as the NCAA is concerned, when those postseason events are usually being held, we conveniently schedule other events at around that time of the year so it really doesn't matter

3.)We are just a few years removed from one of the bigger state scandals involving this university, "The Clout Scandal" in which we lost a president, a chancellor , and 7 of the 9 Board of Trustees members...again negative publicity and points to disorganization and lack of attention

4.) Facility upgrades have been something that has been talked about for probably going on a decade, and while the economic state of the country possibly has a play into why this has never pushed on, it still doesn't shy away from the fact that all this school does it talk, it never seems to put up! Other Universities have done this and its given them an edge, especially in recruiting

There are probably even a few more things I could list here from just the last couple years. The more you take a step back and look at things from the outside in, it really doesn't surprise me that we are in the shape we are in with our 2 major sports programs. I can only hope that Mike Thomas knows what he is doing and just isn't falling in line with those that have preceded him. It also going to take more then a AD with lofty aspirations in my opinion to right this ship. He's also going to have to have a total school backing from top to bottom if he really is going to change anything. This school needs to start changing the way things are handled within itself too. Perception and image are everything, especially when it comes to your sports programs, and right now this school just looks like a disorganized mess.

There's no doubt you have some valid concerns.
When Blago took office and got some of his clowns as trustees, things went downhill...where do you think we came up with the 'clout scandal'?
The school is rebounding from that..and I think they are on the right path.  I really have to think with a good hire for the basketball program, Illinois will be back on the radar pretty quickly.  In fact, several of our other programs are doing pretty good...like volleyball...one of the best programs in the country right now.  That's pretty cool stuff.  Let's hope we can see results at the other sports that will at least show marked improvement, albeit it may be likely we don't see the results kevin hambly has had.
Good point though hawk... :Clapping:

I don't think the administration is anywhere close to even trying to be serious about building a winner in either football or basketball.  Never have been.

The whole Chief thing is your biggest indicator of their lack of "pride" for a lack of a better word in what goes on behind closed doors. They let the "face" of the University be thrown out and trampled on with little to no push back.

I just have a feeling, we will see more of the same 1/2 commitment from them with the new hiring and going forward.

And I believe all the trustees were made to resign by Quinn, but two decided to "fight back" and threaten legal action, so Quinn pulled back on those two.  Now, I'm not 100% positive, but want to guess at which two those were?

I don't see Illini having bigger problems in the last few years than Michigan or Ohio State, yet they seem to have bounced back nicely. I just think the Illini have been through a few years of mediocre coaching. Things will change and the Illini will once again be competitive.

The U of I is in business, but it is not in the business of sports.  It's in the business of academics.  They have clearly made that a priority, and I'm ok with that.  It's just tough because you have many schools today that are in the business of sports, which makes it tough for schools like the U of I to be top tier.

As much as the football and basketball teams are driving me nuts this year, I do try to always keep in perspective that it is an institution of higher learning, not a development league.

(not to say we don't "try" in sports, but... the U of I is not going to do whatever it takes to get the "it" coach to come here)

Hawk & VW,

Your both spot on, our peoblwm did begin around the time Ill caved to PC and got rid of the Chief. Some people are just not very proud of what we have, kinda like RBG saying what she did. I do beliveve that the school shool should focus on Ed. rather than sports. That being said, sports is a big thing in this country and a out let for many people, but should not be place over the higher learning aspect. This was brought up by GF the AD of ISU at church yesterday, He also said that MT has a mess on his hands.

Hawk, I completely agree with you.

About 3 years ago I posted our personal experience at the CU campus when we visited the UofI with my oldest son.  It was a pathetic experience.  Poor branding, poor presentation, they showed up late for our meeting with no apology, apathetic attitude, poor follow up, et al.   We visited the UofI more than any other school trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and it just never got any better.   And, this was a kid with a 34 ACT, top ten ranking in a class of 400+, and was accepted into Ilinois' Honors program.  On top of that he was a HUGE Illini fan with a blue and orange bedroom with Illini memorabilia all over his walls, Chief Illiniwek magnets on his truck, etc.  The feeling we walked away with from the UofI was they didn't have their act together and didn't know their audience.  It as very disorganized.

IMO, that type of experience reflects the U's overall culture, and management style.   Crap flows downhill so to speak.
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.  2 Chronicles 7:14
