Do you guys think we'll be forced to have a minority hire as was rumored after the Beckman contract approval issue with the 2 abstaining trustees' votes?

If not, I'd LOVE to see Brad Stevens hired. Look what he did with their talent. Smart guy and young.

No thanks.  To me, this would be Bruce Weber part 2 - great couple of years due to the talent he inherits, would not be able to recruit to sustain the success.  I'm also scared of Marshall for this reason.

I am pretty sure a forced black hire due to PC/affirmative action/white guilt won't end well.  If the best guy for the job happens to be black, then I think its fine.

I want young and energetic, color is secondary. But if it's Smart or Marshall, I am 100% fine with that and lets get back on track

Read this yesterday in Seth Davis' Mailbag.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/seth_davis/02/15/Hoops.mailbag/index.html?sct=cb_t12_a1

So with Illinois falling by the wayside in the Big Ten, is this Coach Weber's swan song? If so, who do the Illini look to especially with a loaded junior class in Chicago?-- Jeff Keane, Tinley Park, IL

I almost didn't include this question because I like Bruce Weber so much and want to see him succeed. However, I'm not exactly breaking news by reporting that the vibes around him are not very good, to say the least. When your athletic director a) didn't hire you and b) says he'll evaluate you at the end of the season, you're being sent a clear message: Win big and win soon.

It's premature to speculate about potential replacements, so I won't bother -- except to point out that I think Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall is going to be the hottest mid-major coach this spring. Champaign isn't a great college town along the lines of places like Ann Arbor, Madison, Chapel Hill, Athens et al., but the assets of this job are immense. The connection to Chicago is foremost among them, but keep in mind that recruiting in a big city like Chicago is never easy -- mostly because it's difficult to do it successfully without cheating. Still, Illinois is one of a small handful of schools with a national brand that can draw recruits coast to coast.

I sure hope Weber turns this thing around. He is a good guy and a good coach who has conducted himself with the utmost class. At the end of the day, however, this is about winning. And if Weber can't get this thing done, I promise there will be a long line of coaches begging for the chance to come to Champaign and try.

Great find Mike, I have been saying forever this is how coaches will view this job. Not saying we cant swing and miss, but there will be a line to get in here.

And Marshall would be a great choice

why would he be a good choice?...he's another "mid major guy" ....a lot of people around here admit that was one reason why they didn't like the Weber hire

just asking, do you know something I dont?

Bill Self was a mid major guy too. So is Shaka Smart. So is Brad Stevens.  It's getting the right mid major guy. I think Bruce was the RIGHT GUY at the RIGHT TIME based on having a loaded roster roster. Once he had to rebuild and restock is where the problems occured.

I would assume Marshall, Smart, Cronin, Romar, Grant would be the first 5 guys we interview.

Hawk one other factor that people forget is money

Illinois will pay a hoops coach close to 2 million (or more). That is top 20 in terms of pay in 300+ schools. Money alone will drive guys to look. We are all greedy bastages after all  :icon_biggrin:

If they cant then we are gonna get an assistant you never heard of and the chances of a longer rebuild are higher as you stated

Does anyone know how much Marshall, Smart, Cronin, Romar, and Grant make?

(Admittedly too lazy to look it up myself.)
