PG's or lack there of
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:36:04 PM »
Hey all I just wanted to discuss PG's in college basketball or at UI in general.  How important is it to have a god PG on the floor?

We have failed in recruiting a true PG since Chet Frazier and most would likely say he was not good enough to make a deep run.  That being said maybe our better recruiting in the last few years has overshadowed the recruiting mistakes we have had.  Most of the scrambling between seasons have put a priority on PG's bringing in guys like Meacham, Sam, and now Orris because of recruiting misses.

Some we have missed on L Jackson, V Jones, J Pullen, J Pargo,  K Dillard, M Paige, and the list goes on.  We have used D-Mac, T Meacham and Chet since Dee left and small stints of J Jordan, Sammy, and now Tracy.  If the PG play is truly important I would say the single biggest reason for why we have stayed mediocre is because of recruiting failures.  Even though most would give praise for the players we have had since the 09' class the reality is we blew it.  Everything was sugar coated because the string of SG's were highly rated and the thought was they would become PG's.  That list includes D-Mac, DJ, Paul, JB, Head and now Tracy.

The point is when you think about it Weber and staff have failed at recruiting since they got here.  Recruiting has always been the underlying problem in Bruce's tenure and always will be as long as he is here.  I think they have known it's a problem but they have not been able to address it hints why they bring in Sam and then Orris then J James.  Maybe a little too late

On the flip side I am not sure some of the better teams in basketball have a really good PG.  Who's the PG at UK?  KU?  Syracuse?  I know Duke has Rivers and UNC has Strickland but is it overblown that a PG will make or break you as a college program?

On paper, I can always convince myself that the talent is there to contend among college basketball's elite, even if it's obviously foolish to expect it.

I think good guard play in general is more important than PG play. The teams you described like UK, KU, tc.. use a point forward or combo guard guy at the point.

Great guard play in the tourney wins games. Thats why we have a chance should we make it, since we actually have talented guards, maybe we can win a game

Marquis Teague is the PG at UK. Tyshon Taylor at KU. Both are really good. Cuse uses guard by committee.

I think having a true PG is essential, especially against super athletic teams and pressure defense.

Is Taylor a pure point he seemed like more of a combo guy, or am I wrong?

I dont watch too many KU games, but from what I remember hes the main ball handler and gets the ball to T-Rob in good positions. Hard to determine if hes a pure point though. He does turn it over quite a bit.

Tracy Abrams is doing really well as a true freshman PG IMO.  Please don't include TA as a 2G.  He is playing the PG spot and doing really well IMO.  If Sam is a PG, then TA is every bit a PG IMO.

I agree player I think Tracy has played really well and grown as a player this season.  Sam is nothing but a waste of minutes and probably the reason Head left.  Who wouldn't be ashamed to play behind "The Y".  I was just under the impression that he was more of a combo 1-2 in high school and aau.

I agree we have "talented guards" but we do not have a truly talented point guard.  No doubt Abrams in improving very nicely.  I think his progression is on a decent pace; it's about what I expect from him at this point in the season, but he is a freshman.  I think a true point makes a very big difference, especially if you are going to run the motion, a true floor leader is needed with a high basketball IQ

Abrams looked very good today. I would love to see he and Leonard with another year together. I think they are getting use to each other.
