15 assists on 21 made baskets. Much better in that area compared to last game.

Too many turnovers though. 22 of them. Gotta take care of the ball and value possessions.

41% shooting. Not going to cut it against better competition. Not sure if it was bad shot selection or what, but that's a pretty poor number vs a team you should have no problem getting easy baskets on.

COTG - Griffey. 10 pts, 14 rebs

The freshman didn't play well tonight but DJ, Meyers, and Griffey led the way.  We have long segments in the game without intensity.  This team needs to play with a strong intense desire the entire game or we will get beat by many teams.  The youth will show up when we go up against a stronger opponent.  But it sure is great to watch this team develop and grow together they are very unselfish and well balanced.
On paper, I can always convince myself that the talent is there to contend among college basketball's elite, even if it's obviously foolish to expect it.

My son and I went to the game last night.  It wasn't near as much fun to watch as we'd hoped.  We played hard on D most of the time, but the offense is just pretty bad at this point.  I know it's early, but we really have to make some significant improvements early on.  We settle for way too many jumpshots...and I doubt we rebound like that against a MSU or OSU.
I really like our inside game more though...when we use it.  ML needs to get more touches, but also needs to work on getting open closer to the basket.
I really like Abrams even though he struggled last night...he's a player.  Sammy looks nice when in the game..and DJ played good, but still mostly shooting jumpshots.
BP needs to come alive...he did nothing last night.
TG is a pleasant surprise.  I really hope he can hang when the competition gets better.

Illini mixing good with not so good

http://www.herald-review.com/blogs/mark_tupper/illini-mixing-good-with-not-so-good-leonard-getting-notice/article_0c785094-0f45-11e1-9a29-001cc4c002e0.html

Quote from: Mark Tupper
Very, very early in this college basketball season, we're playing a game of measuring the good and encouraging signs from the Illini team against the signs that make us wince and wonder.

There have been plenty of both.

Coming into the season, coach Bruce Weber said he was worried about rebounding and turnovers. He was worried about his young team acquiring experience and turning it into maturity and confidence.

This may change as we move forward, but the biggest of those worries is turnovers.

Illinois turned the ball over 22 times Monday night in a 66-46 victory over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville after turning it over a dozen times in the opener against Loyola. In two games, that's 34 turnovers as compared to 24 assists. That's not a winning ratio.

After a very good start, Tracy Abrams hit a rough stretch on Monday and finished with one assist and five turnovers.

The good news is that the rebounding was outstanding Monday night, although we need to understand that Illinois is playing some teams that are considerably smaller than when competition they'll be facing down the road.

This is what stuck out to me the most. I hope it was just a fluke.  It was also nice to see Leonard rebounding!

Cougars Fall at Illinois in Opener

The 22 Illinois turnovers is more than the Cougars forced in any game a season ago.

"Our guys did a good job of paying attention to the details and pressuring the basketball," Forrester added. "They have a lot of talent so for our guys to come out and play some defense and have Illinois commit 22 turnovers is a step in the right direction of where we want our defense to be."

24 FT - Good.  15 assists - good (or at least better).  Out rebounded SIU-E by 20 - great.  11 blocks - good.  7 steals - decent.  22 TO - really bad.

Not a bad game by any measure.  Only the second game of the season - they will get better.

I am, of course, a game behind like everyone else.  But from watching the Quincy and Loyola games, there are some things I like.

Our defense is decent.  And Meyers Leonard makes it better.  He definately has a knack for blocking shots.  DJ and Brandon are
good defenders, but need to be Chester-like.  Abrams is Chester-like, at least as Chester was as a Freshman.  And I'm not that
worried about the 4 position.  Both Griffey and Shaw are decent inside.  Shaw is amazing on the perimeter as well.  But we still
have lapses and leave too many open 3's.  But the kicker is that there is a big dropoff when Egwu comes in.  Keeping Leonard
on the floor is imperative to success for this team.

Offensively, we are challenged as we have been for a while.  BP3 has to be aggressive in getting in the lane.  But I did see some
semblance of the 2005 team in the way the guys ran some offense.  The guys were moving and the ball was moving.  Some
quick penetration to get the defense to move and a kickout to the open 3.  But the ball needs to touch Meyers or Grifs hands
much much more.  I think our pg will be ok and Im looking forward to Crandall getting on the floor.  If Leonard and Griffey can
hit the shot at the ft line ala Cook, then we could be very good because our guards are excellent rebounders.
