All-American Championships Start
« on: October 03, 2011, 09:47:02 AM »
There are three big singles titles in college tennis; the All-American National Championships in October, the ITA Indoor National Championships in November and the NCAA Championships in May. The All-American starts on October 3rd.

The Illini have three of their players in the tournament. In the qualifying rounds, Roy Kalmanovich will try to fight his way into the main draw. Dennis Nevolo is in the main draw because of his No. 7 ranking and Stephen Hoh is in because of the ITA Summer Championship he won in August. The winner of that tournament gets an automatic bid into the draw.

Amer Delic finished as runner-up in 2002 and that is the closest an Illini has come to winning the tournament. Delic and Michael Caulkins won the doubles championship in 2002 but we do not have any Illini in the doubles tournament this year.

The tournament is being held at the University of Tulsa.

Go Illini!

Sky, did you play tennis at UI? Just seems like a sport not worth following with no tv coverage unless you have ties to the team... not trying to be a douche either.

No, I was never that good. I played all thru high school and played some in college for recreation. But I was usually too busy studying and working to get myself thru college. I agree you have to be a tennis nut to follow the sports sometimes because isn't on TV. But I love tennis, love to watch it and follow the college and pro scenes and want to support the Illini tennis team any way I can. Besides, the Illini tennis team still holds the latest NCAA National Championship that Illinois has won.  ;)

I wouldn't say I have ties to the team but I have had some of the players contact me through facebook and give me updates and let me know what's going on with the team sometimes. I've even pissed a couple of them off for being too down on head coach Brad Dancer but oh well.

The Illini tennis team is one of the best sports teams we have and we probably have the best record in history of the B1G teams (Michigan might have a say in that conversation). Root for the Illini tennis team!

Just wanted to add that I'm hoping by staying on top of the tennis news and posting it here, the Illini tennis fans will start gathering here. I'm also trying it on one other site but I hope it happens here. There aren't as many as bball or fball fans but they are a few of us out there anyways.

Roy Kalmanovich defeated Bob van Overbeek (Florida) 7-6 (3), 6-2 today to advance to the main draw of the tournament. The Illini will have 3 players representing them. Great job Roy!

Main draw starts tomorrow.

The main draw is now up. Nevolo is seeded No. 6 and could meet No. 2 Quigley (Kentucky) in the quarterfinals. Hoh could meet No. 1 Rola (Ohio State) in the round of 16. Kalmanovich could meet No. 8 Hernandez (North Carolina) in the round of 16.

The All-American Championships' 1st round results:

Dennis Nevolo defeated Malte Stropp (Miss State) 6-1, 6-1.
Roy Kalmanovich defeated Akash Muppidi (Boston College) 6-3, 6-4.
Stephen Hoh lost to Remi Boutillier (Fresno State) 3-6, 4-6.

Nevolo and Kalmanovich move on to the round of 32.

Nevolo defeated Adrian Puget (UCLA) 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (3).
Kalmanovich defeated Yannick Madden (Clemson) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Stephen Hoh lost his first match but came back in the consolation match to defeat Enij Bonin (Denver, No. 30).

Nelson and Kalmanovich both move on to the final 16. The top three seeds all lost today so the Illini have a great chance to do some damage in this tourney. Nevolo plays Guillermo Alcorta (Oklahoma, qualifier) and Kalmanovich plays Jose Hernandez (North Carolina, No. 8 seed) tomorrow.

Go Illini!
