"There'll never be another Jordan the way there'll never be another Johnny Carson or another Walter Cronkite. Individuals don't hold our interest that regularly and that long anymore." Did you see that picture? 800 reporters. Wow! My favorite athlete of alltime, and there is no 2d place, no one else is even close.

I hated the day he retired from here and you knew it was for real that time....It sucked! You knew he could still play and lead the Bulls, it wasn't just the retirement of Jordan it was the breakup of one of the best sports teams of all time.had his dad not fallen victim to violence theres not a doubt in my mind the Bulls would have had 8 titles in a row and almost a full decade of dominance!  Jordan had all the abilities in the world but he won because of his heart and determinantion and thats something you rarely see today, and its in that all put together that made him the greatest of all time. Kobe and Lebron have ability but I'm not sure they have even 25 % of the sheer determination and heart that MJ had on the court.  I remember as a kid watching games you could almost see when MJ would turn on that switch and there wasn't anything that could stop him, that was it you knew the game was over if you were a fan of the other team and if you were a Bulls fan you knew they were going to win.

My favorite was always Walter Payton, because of his ultimate class. Jordan was always my 2nd, but his after-Bulls days kind of lowered my opinion of him a bit.

Come on now Hawk.  You know you were in your late 40's during the MJ/Bulls run
:icon_biggrin:   Just jacking with ya.  No doubt about it,  I agree 100%. Can anyone name an athlete who dominated there sport in our lifetime the way MJ did?  I can think of two.  Tiger, and Gretzky.  Anyone else?

Competitive contact sports in the modern era? no, I cant think of any.... I would put Jordan and Gretzky alone in that category, the things they did on the playing field in their prime were just jaw dropping sometimes

Tiger dominated Golf, and not taking away his accomplishments but nobody is trying to keep Tiger from putting the ball in the hole.

I cant think of any in football that I would say that particular player dominated the field and was unstoppable on their own..... Barry Sanders was pretty unstoppable at times for a while, and did things that made you do a double take, but I wouldn't say he was dominant..... I dunno, cant really think of any.

Favre was fairly dominant, as is Duncan, as was Olajuwon, Mariano Rivera, etc.. but they don't rise to that level.

I've lived a little longer, but I'd add several that are close, and one that is even. Mario Lemieux in hockey is real close, and Magic and Jabbar in the NBA.  Jabbar, in college, was as dominant as MJ and Gretzky in the NBA and NHL, respectively.

Jabbar, and maybe even Walton in college.
